July 2010: Inishowen
Inishowen's resident conservationists have been scouring the peninsula for signs of Hen Harrier breeding to no avail. The elusive birds nest sites will remain secret for another year. Members of the Inishowen wildlife club, Irish raptor study group and National parks and wildlife service (NPWS) have all been conducting effort based watches as part of the National hen harrier survey 2010 conducted by the Golden Eagle trust on behalf of NPWS.
Th survey has proved very time consuming with the teams of volunteers asked to identify suitable upland and bog habitat for potential nest sites and feeding areas. The teams are also required to conduct 3hour long effort watches of set vantage points. A number of birds have been seen but the survey teams have been unable to track these individual sightings back to a nest site and thus are unable to confirm breeding for the species on the peninsula. A Hen harrier nest was identified on Inishowen in 2008 and 2009 but the birds have failed to return to the site in 2010, possibly moving to a near -by site or another area. The Hen harrier has cause some controversy in the midlands with SAC designations for the birds limiting forestation densities as well as wind farm locations and densities.
